Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â The Nashville Sounds closed out their third homestand on a down note and had two impressive streaks snapped on Friday evening as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Sacramento River Cats, 4-2 & 5-0, in front of 8,471 fans at Greer Stadium. Nashville dropped to 21-12 on the year with the losses and finished the homestand with a 3-4 mark.
Three River Cats hurlers combined on a three-hitter in the 5-0 nightcap victory, handing the Sounds their first shutout loss in 72 games (dating back to a 5-0 defeat on July 23, 2002 at New Orleans).
Rich Harden turned in an impressive outing, allowing only one hit over four innings before being removed due to a pitch count. Chad Harville (2-0) tossed a pair of scoreless frames to pick up the win. Nelson Figueroa (2-2) absorbed the loss for the Sounds after allowing three runs over six innings despite fanning nine batters.
Sacramento took a 2-0 lead in the second on an Esteban German RBI groundout and Chris Prieto's run-scoring single. The River Cats upped the advantage to 3-0 with a fourth-inning unearned run before designated hitter Dave McCarty closed out the night's scoring with a two-run blast off reliever Jim Mann in the top of the seventh, his 10th roundtripper of the season.
John Barnes, Mike Gulan, and J.J. Davis all singled in the loss for Nashville, which was held without an extra-base hit for the first time in 66 games (dating back to last July).
Aaron Harang (6-1) dominated the Sounds in the opener, striking out nine batters over 6 2/3 innings while allowing only two runs to pick up his PCL-leading sixth victory in Sacramento's 4-2 win.
Sacramento plated a pair of runs in the second on Graham Koonce's eighth homer of the year â a solo shot off John Wasdin â and Adam Melhuse's RBI double. The River Cats doubled their advantage in the fourth on RBI knocks by Jose Flores and Billy McMillon. Nashville's Tomas de la Rosa extended his season-best hitting streak to eight games with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning, his third longball of the year.
Wasdin (4-1) was tagged with his first loss of the year after surrendering four runs in just 4.0 innings of work, his shortest outing of the season. Micah Bowie recorded the final out of the game to earn his second save.
The Sounds open an eight-game road trip tomorrow evening at AutoZone Park in Memphis, their "home away from home." Nashville is 17-6 all-time in the home park of the cross-state rival Redbirds. Right-hander Justin Reid (1-1) will take the hill for the Sounds and face Memphis right-hander Nerio Rodriguez (1-1) in the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game set.
