Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - A four-run seventh inning rally by Oklahoma fell short in game one of a Thursday night doubleheader, as the Beavers hit five doubles to beat the RedHawks 6-5. In the second game, Mario Valdez went 3 for 3, helping Portland on its way to a decisive 6-2 victory in front of 4,412 at PGE Park.

Most of the action in game one for Portland (23-12) came in the bottom of the sixth. After Tagg Bozied doubled, Alex Fernandez hit another double, scoring Bozied to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Mendez and Haad then singled to bring Fernandez home and after a sac-fly by Castro, the score was 4-1.

Oklahoma (19-15) rallied in the seventh to make it interesting, scoring four runs off Carlton Loewer (5-1) before he was replaced by Duncan, who earned save number 13 in the win.

The RedHawks struck first in the second game, making it 1-0 in the second after a couple of doubles by Hart and Mench. By the end of the second however, the Beavers would take control of the ballgame. Jason Bay hit a solo shot to tie things up-his tenth homer of the year. A fielder's choice then scored Risinger, pre-empting a deep two-run shot to right-center by Fernandez to put the Beavs' ahead 4-1.

Oklahoma scored again on a sac-fly in the third and Portland would add two more runs in the sixth off a two-run double by Jake Thrower, his third RBI of the game.

Notes...RHP Johnny Hunter was sent down to AA Mobile and RHP Brian Tollberg was activated from the extended list.
