Trenton Devils News Release
Cincinnati, OH - The Devils fought back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Cyclones Wednesday night at US Bank Arena, 4-2. Mike Harder had three points including the game winning goal and Gerald Coleman registered 37 saves as Trenton stopped its four game losing streak.
Following a 17-shot performance in a 3-1 loss Tuesday, the Devils managed only 16 shots Wednesday compared to 39 for the Cyclones. But the Devils were more disciplined in the later matchup, permitting the Cyclones seven power plays, five fewer than the night before. Less pressure on the penalty killers translated into success for the Devils power play, with both Brett Wilson and Mike Harder scoring power play goals for the tying and go-ahead tallies.
Like in Tuesday's matchup with Cincinnati, a flurry of first period scoring gave the Cyclones an early advantage on the ice and the scoreboard. Dustin Sproat notched his sixth of year at 8:01, taking a feed from Brett Robinson in the left wing corner following Jason Jozsa's pinching effort to keep the puck deep. With the Devils on their heels, Cincinnti stuck again just 35 seconds later. Mike McLean came up with a weak side rebound after a close right wing shot from Ryan Del Monte. McLean notched his third of the season and Trenton trailed 2-0.
Almost as quickly, 34 seconds later, the Devils put a dent in the Cyclone's lead. After a blast from Brett Wilson, Mike Harder tried a tough angle shot from the deep left wing. When goalie Robert Mayer knocked the puck back in Harder's direction, the former Colgate Raider centered to Dan Eves who battled momentarily near the right post, finally chipping it past Mayer for his fourth goal of the season and Trenton trailed 2-1 at 9:10 of the first.
A fight between Jeremy Akeson and Jamie Coghlan and an exchange of fruitless powerplays eventually led to a Brian O'Hanley interference minor at 19:01 providing Trenton with its third power play of the game. Reminiscent of the their preseason power play success, it took only 21 seconds for the Devils to convert. Brett Wilson banged home a rebound following a Dave Leaderer shot off a pass from Mike Harder from behind the goal. It was the first Devils power play goal since they got two Friday in Reading, as Wilson collected his fourth goal and his 12th point.
Tied at 2-2 after 20 minutes, the Devils took their first lead of the two-game series with their second power play goal 16 minutes into the second. The Devils had turned the puck over momentarily in the offensive end, but Leaderer took the puck back while also keeping it inside the blueline on the left wing boards. The UMASS grad then moved the puck ahead to Harder whose back and forth passing with Dan Eves faked out Smith and Harder notched his second goal of the season to put the Devils up 3-2.
An insurance goal came for Trenton late in the third on a breakaway similar to Tuesday's, with Tim Kunes again getting the primary assist. On a give-and-go with Kunes, Jeremy Akeson on right wing capped the scoring at 18:37 with his third of the season in a 4-2 Trenton victory.
Trenton (6-6-1-2, 15pts) next travels to Kalamazoo hoping to get a measure of revenge against the Wings (10-1-1-0) who won twice in Trenton to open the season. The team battle at 7:30 Friday and 4:00 Sunday.
