Devils March Along with Shootout Win at Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. - A game filled with offensive outbursts was eventually won by goaltending as Mike McKenna made all five saves during the shootout to lead the Albany Devils to a 6-5 victory at the Norfolk Admirals Saturday. Steve Zalewski scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Devils their eighth win this month (8-3-0-0). For the season, they improve to 30-35-1-3. The Admirals, who are battling for playoff positioning, go to 35-20-8-5.

Albany carried a 3-0 lead into the first intermission and a 4-2 advantage into the second. Two quick goals by the Admirals made it 4-4 only 3:16 into the third. The Devils responded with a goal by Anderson at 3:50. He swiped in a rebound off an initial bid by Chad Wiseman.

From there the Admirals trailed for less than four minutes. Vladimir Mihalik's wrister found a hole, making it 5-5 at 7:34 and eventually sent the game into overtime.

Wiseman led the Devils with a goal and two assists. The reigning Reebok/AHL Player of the Week now has 12 points (8g-4a) in seven games. Anderson also enjoyed a multi-point contest with a tally and a helper. He leads the team with 50 points (21g-29a).

Not including the shootout, McKenna was called upon to make 40 saves on 45 shots. He extends his winning streak to six games by making 17 saves in the first, 13 in the second, 10 in the third and five in overtime.

Jaroslav Janus was the losing netminder despite making 18 saves on 20 shots after entering the contest after the second period. Cedrick Desjardins started the game and gave up three goals on eight shots.

Oliver Magnan and Darcy Zajac joined Wiseman with first period goals. Magnan opened the scoring at 2:01 and Wiseman followed at 12:08. Zajac concluded the scoring at 18:24.

In the second, Norfolk pulled within one thanks to back-to-back goals by Paul Szczechura (2:03) and Mathieu Roy (15:17). Before the end of the period, Zalewski found the back of the net at 19:29. A four-goal period awaited the teams in the third.
