
Pirates Beat Bears in Overtime

HERSHEY, PA - Mark Parrish scored the winner 2:51 into overtime and added two assists as the Portland Pirates came-from behind to top the Hershey Bears 4-3 in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 10,737 at the Giant Center.
Matt Ellis, Paul Byron and T.J. Brennan also scored for the Pirates while Luke Adam collected two assists. Portland upped their record to 42-18-5-2 with the win and moved into a tied with Manchester for first in the Atlantic Division after the Monarchs lost 2-1 in overtime to Bridgeport.
Andrew Joudrey, Patrick McNeill and Andrew Gordon scored for the Bears, now 42-22-2-5 on the season.
The Bears got on the board early as Joudrey connected just 1:34 into the game to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Ellis answered on the power play to even the count but just three minutes later Hershey netted a power-play goal of their own as McNeill struck to give the Bears a 2-1 lead after one. Gordon made it a 3-1 eight minutes into the second period with the Bears second straight power-play goal but Byron brought the Pirates back to within one before the end of the second, finishing off a two-man break and leaving Portland down by one after two. Brennan forced overtime with a power-play goal with just under six minutes remaining in regulation.
The Pirates out shot the Bears 31-30 in the game as David Leggio posted the victory.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Parrish, 2. McNeill and 3. Bears forward Boyd Kane (two assists).
The Pirates complete a three-game road trip tomorrow (Sunday) when they travel to Providence for a 4:05 p.m. game against the Bruins. The game can be heard live on News Talk 95.5 WLOB and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 p.m.
The Pirates return to the Civic Center on Tuesday to host their second annual School Day Game, presented by Irving Oil and Modern Woodmen of America. The Worcester Sharks come to town for a special 11 a.m. start. This special event is designed to help promote students to eat healthy and stay active and educated. Students participating receive a complimentary health booklet prior to the game that has fun interactive activities. The UNUM Challenge also continues and the Pirates can seal their third UNUM Challenge victory in the past five years with a win.
