Devils Come up Big in Win

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - The Albany Devils had to go through Stanley Cup finalist goaltender Michael Leighton to claim a 4-2 victory against Adirondack on Sunday afternoon at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall. The win was the Devils' second in as many nights and they now own a 2-1 advantage in the Time Warner Cable Cup series.

Trevor Kell highlighted the Devils' efforts with a pair of goals in the third period.

"It feels really good," Kell said. "Just to get those first two out of the way; I really don't care who it was against. To help the team out was a big bonus too."

Jeff Frazee won the goaltending battle by making 26 saves for this eighth victory of the season, improving the Devils record to 11-13-0-0 on the year. Leighton, in the second game of this conditioning assignment, made 23 stops as the Phantoms go to 3-20-2-0.

"It starts with [Frazee]," said head coach Rick Kowalsky. "He has to be our guy."

"If we are playing the way we should be, he shouldn't have to face a lot of quality shots. When he does we need him to make the save and he did again tonight. He has to keep going."

Nick Palmieri and Adam Henrique and provided the other goals for the Devils, who were playing their third game in three days in three locations.

Palmieri opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season and third point in as many games. The goal came in a scrum in front of the net at 5:28 and although only one shot was credited, David McIntyre registered the assist - his 12th point -- with a blocked try.

Moments later at 8:16, the Devils grabbed a 2-0 lead when Henrique ripped a slap shot between the circles pass Leighton. A Phantoms defensive miscue led to the goal and Matt Anderson was credited with the assist. Henrique posted his seventh goal of the season and second in two games, while Anderson earned his team-leading 14th point. He is now eight points away from his 100th career AHL point.

Before the period was over, the Phantoms cut the deficit in half when Kevin Marshall beat Frazee at 13:13 with his first goal of the season.

Kell reestablished a two-goal lead while Albany was playing 5-on-3 at 4:46 of the third. He split the legs of Leighton for the team's fifth shorthanded goal of the season.

Less than a minute later, Luke Pither made it 3-2 at 5:42 with a shot over the glove Frazee.

It was Kell again with the response that put the game out of reach. He registered his second goal of the game and his second of the season with 6:07 remaining.
