Pirates Comeback Falls Short

WORCESTER, MA - Steven Zalewski scored a goal and two assists to lead the Worcester Sharks to a 6-4 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon at the DCU Center.

Kevin Henderson, T.J. Trevelyn, Cameron MacIntyre, Sean Sullivan and Nick Schaus also scored for the Sharks, now 12-7-1-4.

Derek Whitmore, Mark Mancari, Nick Crawford and Corey Tropp scored for the Pirates, who slipped to 14-7-1-1 on the season.

The Sharks got off to a quick start as Henderson gave the home side a 1-0 lead just 68 seconds into the game. Trevelyn and MacIntyre added to the lead with two goals in five minutes in the second half of the opening period to send Worcester into the first intermission with a 3-0 advantage. Sullivan made it 4-0 eight minutes into the second as he scored on a breakaway. The Pirates finally got on the board in the later stages of second as Whitmore struck but only 13 seconds later the Sharks restored their four-goal advantage when Schaus answered to give Worcester a 5-1 lead heading into the third. Zalewski made it 6-1 just 13 seconds into the third before Mancari, Crawford (shorthanded) and Tropp scored in succession to close the gap to two goals.

David Leggio started for the Pirates and allowed three goals on 14 shots before being replaced by Jhonas Enroth late in the opening period. Enroth allowed three goals on 12 shots to take the loss.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Zalewski, 2. MacIntyre and 3. Schaus.

The next Pirates home game takes place Tuesday (December 7th) when the Sharks visit the Civic Center in a 6:30 p.m. start. It's the first of three Mini Bobblehead Collectible nights this season.
