Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins received goals from Jamie Arniel and Joe Colborne, while Michael Hutchinson earned the victory.
Early in the first frame, fans got their first taste of Brian McGrattan's boxing abilities, reminding fans why he has the AHL record for the most penalty minutes in one season. McGrattan dropped the gloves and his helmet in a theatrical display before landing right after right on Justin Johnson. Providence's bench gained momentum following the fight and largely dominated the rest of the period, intercepting neutral zone attempts. The P-Bruins began to test Jeff Zatkoff midway through the frame, winning multiple faceoffs for quick shots off the point, but Zatkoff was able to keep Providence off the board and send both teams into the locker rooms scoreless.
Providence continued to control the offensive momentum in the second period, with Arniel testing Zatkoff early and often. Despite two consecutive Manchester penalties, Providence couldn't connect on rebounds and find the back of the net. Rookie net-minder Michael Hutchinson kept the contest scoreless, making the initial and rebound saves on multiple Manchester opportunities mid-way through the period. With just over two minutes to play in the frame, Arniel beat a flat-footed Monarchs defender on a left-side rush on his way to blank Zatkoff with a snap-shot right under the crossbar. Defensemen Andrew Bodnarchuk and Matt Bartkowski got the helpers on the opening goal.
The Monarchs' frustration was evident early in the third period with two Manchester players heading to the box on consecutive penalties. Rookie Colborne capitalized on the man-advantage at the 5:02 mark when he collected a rebound in the slot and beat Zatkoff for his third power play goal of the season. Wyatt Smith and Steve Kampfer assisted on the power play goal. Providence only held on to the two goal lead for two minutes as Manchester capitalized on confusion in the P-Bruins' defensive zone with Justin Azevedo finding the back of the net. Bud Holloway and former P-Bruin David Kolomatis assisted on the goal to bring the Monarchs back within one. With smart defensive play and acrobatic saves by Hutchinson, the P-Bruins were able to deny a late offensive effort by the Monarchs for the win.
Hutchinson collected his seventh win of the season, blocking 34 of 35 attempts. Zatkoff stopped 45 of 47 shots for the loss. Providence went 1-for-7 on the power play and a perfect 2-of-2 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins get back into action with three games next weekend, beginning Friday against Portland at 7:05 p.m. for T-Shirt Night. On Saturday, Providence travels to Springfield for a 7:30 p.m. tilt to kick off a home-and-home series. The club returns home to The Dunk on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. versus the Falcons for Lip Balm Night.
