Destino's Blast Helps Lift Intimidators to Series Win over Lakewood

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Using a two-run home run and a key two-run Lakewood error, the Kannapolis Intimidators (16-15, 44-55) took home the series win over the Lakewood BlueClaws (10-19, 39-60) Sunday evening with a 5-4 win at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
The Intimidators jumped on the BlueClaws in the bottom of the second as Ramon Beltre hit his team-leading sixth triple to right field to score Camilo Quniteiro for the first run of the game.
Davis Martin looked to be following up Sam Long's (10 strikeouts) Saturday performance on the mound early on. Through three innings, Martin had totaled five strikeouts and allowed no hits.
In the bottom of the third, Kannapolis added onto their lead. After Andrew Vaughn was hit by a pitch, Alex Destino hit a monster two-run home run (12) over the right field wall to extend the lead to 3-0.
It wasn't until the top of the fourth that Martin began running into trouble. A couple of walks and a hit batter left the bases loaded with two outs in the inning. Lakewood tacked on two straight singles, scoring three runs between the hits, to tie things up at 3-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Michael Hickman hit a towering fly ball to Seth Lancaster that looked to end the inning, but Lancaster muffed it. Destino and Quinteiro were both on base at the time and came in to score to re-take the lead, 5-3.
In his last inning of work in the sixth, Martin allowed a solo home run to Cole Stobbe (9) that cut Kannapolis' lead to one, but he still put the Intimidators in a position to win. In those six innings, Martin allowed four hits, four earned runs, and struckout eight while walking two. Declan Cronin came in to replace Martin.
Cronin maintained the lead, but after a hit, walk, and hit by pitch, it left the bases loaded with two outs once again for the BlueClaws. The Intimidators decided to go back to their bullpen and brought in Jacob Lindgren to get out of the inning. Lakewood got solid contact on their next at-bat, but Lindgren made a snazzy grab on the grounder at the mound to get the third out.
Lindgren and the defense also closed things out in the top of the ninth to grab not only the 5-4 win, but the series win.
Kannapolis will hit the road for the next week starting on Tuesday against the Lexington Legends. The starters are TBD.
