Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Charlottetown Islanders did this one for Kevin Elliott.
On a day where the focus laid off the ice, the Isles brought the offense one it. The team's top trio of Cédric Desruisseaux, Brett Budgell, and Thomas Casey combined for 10 points as the Isles handed the Cape Breton Eagles a 7-3 loss on a night dedicated to the therapist known affectionately as Kevie.
"Hearing all the messages and words from everyone shows how much people care about him and how much he has effected all of us. Winning tonight and sending him off on a high note was important to us." said defender Noah Laaouan on the team's athletic therapist following the game.
Laaouan picked up an assist of his own in the game, the 100th point of his career. It was one of three major milestones to occur in the game as Desruisseaux notched two team records himself; His second goal of the game made him the first Islander in team history to reach the 40-goal plateau in a season, and also helped him break Filip Chlapik's franchise record 21-game point streak.
"It was definitely on the back of my mind, but not something I was focusing on," said Laaouan on his personal milestone. "I'd been sitting on 99 for a little while, but I wasn't thinking about it too much. Once I got it, it felt great."
The Isles didn't actually have the greatest of starts, finding themselves down a goal heading in to the first intermission. After Drew Elliott picked up the opening goal 39 seconds into the game, the Eagles would score two quick ones in the middle of the period off the sticks of Jérémy Langlois and Connor Trenholm. The two 17-year-olds put the Eagles into unfamiliar territory in Charlottetown, that being a lead.
Despite the deficit, the Isles were far from out of it as they battled back in the second period. Braeden Virtue was the man who tied it up with his first goal as an Islander, gathering a puck along the boards and back peddling before firing a wrister that handcuffed Eagles starter Nicolas Ruccia.
The Isles would trade goals with the Eagles in the middle of the period before Desruisseaux got on the board in the dying seconds of the period, rifling a wristshot on the powerplay past Ruccia for his 39th of the season.
From there, Charlottetown would break it wide open in the third period. Zac Beauregard would score seconds into the final frame followed by consecutive goals by Thomas Casey and Desruisseaux. The Isles would hold that 7-3 lead and take it home for their 32nd win on the year.
Jacob Goobie made 21 saves for the victory, his 10th on the year. Beauregard and Elliott would each add a goal and an assist while William Trudeau had two assists of his own. Laaouan, Lukas Cormier, and Bailey Peach would all add single helpers.
The Isles will waste little time getting back to action as they welcome the Halifax Mooseheads to town on Tuesday night. Fans are reminded to use the ticket for Home Game 19. Those who can't make it can also tune in on Fair Isle Ford Isles Radio and Eastlink Community TV!
