Despite tossing gem, Bums lose

TRAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums allowed only two hits, but surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning to fall 2-1 to the Chillicothe Paints in the opener of a three game series at Wuerfel Park on Tuesday night.

The Beach Bums plated their lone run in the bottom of the third against Chillicothe¡¦s Brian Gartley. Mike Epping led off the frame with a walk and Jeff Brown followed with a bunt single. Brad Roblin dropped a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. After Steve Young drew a walk Kyle Maunus lifted a sacrifice fly to put the Beach Bums ahead.

Traverse City had several chances to score more than one run against Gartley, who lasted 5.1 innings, but left seven runners on base. The Chillicothe bullpen threw the final 3.2 innings without allowing a baserunner.

The Paints took the lead with two unearned runs in the top of the eighth. The first two runners reached against Nick Pepper before Nathan Faulkner attempted to drop a sacrifice bunt. Everyone was safe after Faulkner reached on an error to load the bases. Jared Locke entered and struck out Adrian Cantu, but a passed ball led to a tie game. Travis Garcia¡¦s sacrifice fly put the Paints ahead and Edwin Walker threw the ninth to tally the save.

Lost in the defeat was the effort of Drew Taylor, who made his second start for the Beach Bums. Taylor threw six shutout innings and allowed just two hits while walking two and striking out five. He was the Beach Bums Player of the Game. Traverse City managed just four hits in the game while walking five times. Chillicothe had just two hits, a season low against the Beach Bums, in the win.

The Beach Bums (39-37) will continue the series with the Paints tomorrow night at 7:05pm. LHP Ryan Gehring (4-6, 2.70) gets the ball for the Beach Bums opposite Chillicothe hurler Mike Rocco (0-6, 6.95).
