Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Salisbury, Md.- Walks and errors combined to kill the Shorebirds chances on Sunday evening as Delmarva fell to Hagerstown 7-2 in the series finale. Although the Suns recorded just three hits, all of which came in the fifth inning, Hagerstown took advantage of nine walks and two errors that led to six unearned runs on the evening. With the victory, Hagerstown takes the four game series 3-1. For the fourth straight game, the Suns got on the board first. Tonight, Hagerstown scratched away an unearned run in the first inning. Shorebird starter Luis Noel walked the first two batters he faced and then launched a pickoff attempt into center field. Noel regained his composure to induce two soft grounders back to the mound, and the twenty-year old righthander would proceed to retire 11 consecutive Suns over the next few innings.

With the score tied 1-1 in the fifth, however, Noel ran into trouble again. Leading off the inning, Michael Burgess walked and moved to second on Travis Reagan's sacrifice bunt. Burgess crossed the plate on Tim Pahuta's RBI single, and two batters later, the bases were loaded again following consecutive walks. With the bags full, Boomer Whiting's grounder to third was fielded cleanly by Matt Tucker, but the throw home was errant and the score was 3-1 as everyone moved up a base. Dan Lyons' sacrifice fly added another run to the Suns lead, and Stephen King's three-run homer put some distance between the teams. The Suns scored six runs in the fifth inning on just three hits.

Wally Crancer and Jason White each had two hits to lead the Shorebird offense. The Delmarva bullpen had another excellent game as well. Scott Mueller, re-added to the active roster today, and Shane Matthews combined to toss four and a third scoreless innings.
