Hagerstown Suns News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (3-1) took advantage of a great start by Bradley Meyers and some timely errors by the Delmarva Shorebirds (1-3) to win the finale of a four-game series at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium 7-2 on Sunday.
Meyers (3-2) continued a string of excellent starting pitching by the Suns rotation, going five innings and allowing just one run on four hits and one walk. The run was unearned and Meyers struck out three Shorebirds in the process of earning the win.
The Suns scored in the top of the first inning, as Boomer Whiting walked, advanced to second on a balk, reached third on an error and eventually scored on a double-play hit into by Stephen King.
After the Shorebirds tied the game in the bottom of the third, the Suns piled on six runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
Three walks, three hits, an error and two sacrifices netted the Suns the six runs. After a Michael Burgess walk and a sacrifice bunt by Travis Reagan, Tim Pahuta singled home the first run of the inning. Mark Gildea then walked, as did Valerio Heredia and Whiting reached on an error by Shorebirds third baseman that allowed Pahuta to score.
Dan Lyons then had a sacrifice pop-out to shallow right field that drove in Gildea. King had the second hit of the inning, a three-run home run that drove in Whiting and Heredia, and Seuss rounded out the offense with a single to left field. Burgess, the batter who led off the inning, followed with a fly ball to deep right field that was caught and ended the inning.
The Shorebirds threatened in the ninth, scoring one and loading the bases before reliever Kyle Gunderson closed the door in his second inning of work.
Ryan Harrison also pitched two innings of scoreless relief for Hagerstown.
Luis Noel (7-2) took the loss for Delmarva after allowing seven runs in four and two-thirds innings of work. The Suns will now return to Municipal Stadium for their first homestand in the second half of the.
