Hagerstown Suns News Release

SALISBURY, MD - After capitalizing on terrific pitching performances by their starts in the first two games of the second half of the season, the Hagerstown Suns (2-1) squandered one on Saturday, June 21st, falling to the Delmarva Shorebirds (1-2) 6-5.

Josh Smoker (0-3) started the game for Hagerstown and had his best outing of the year. Smoker allowed just two earned runs in four innings of work, striking out eight Delmarva hitters in the process. He did not factor in the decision.

The Suns were gifted their first run of the game as catcher Sean Rooney scored on an error by the Shorebird second baseman, giving Hagerstown a 1-0 lead. Rooney and first baseman Tim Pahuta each scored in the fourth as well, extending the Suns lead to 3-0.

Delmarva responded in the bottom of the fourth with four runs of their own. Two of the runs came on two solo homers, but the other two were unearned as Pahuta and third baseman Stephen King both had errors in the inning.

After Hagerstown tied the score at 4-4 in the fifth, Delmarva scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-4 lead, and though the Suns battled back with a run in the top of the eighth inning, the lead proved to be too much.

Brett Bordes (2-1) earned the win for Delmarva by pitching one and one third scoreless innings in relief. Mick Mattaliano picked up his 15th save in 17 chances on the season, retiring the Suns in the ninth to close the door.

The Suns and Shorebirds will finish their four game series on Sunday, June 22st at 6:05 p.m.
