Despite Dominguez Milestone and Eighth Inning Rally, Dash Fall 8-7 in Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Despite a game-tying rally in the eighth inning, The Winston-Salem Dash fell 8-7 against the Asheville Tourists on Wednesday night in the second game of a six-game series from McCormick Field.

The Tourists struck first against righthander Johan Dominguez beginning with a leadoff single from Shay Whitcomb in the home half of the first. Whitcomb hustled to third base on a single from Zach Daniels, with whom Whitcomb scored on a single from J.C. Correa.

The Dash matched by testing Asheville with a two-spot of their own against starter Brayan de Paula in the bottom of the second inning. Luis Mieses got the offense rolling with a one-out double to right field and came home on three consecutive walks, leading to de Paula exiting the game and being replaced by Chandler Casey. Casey allowed the leading run as Jagger Rusconi sacrificed to center field, scoring Samir Dueñez to tie the game at two.

The third through sixth innings remained a pitchers' duel. Chandler Casey lasted 3.2 innings allowing only the hit by Rusconi, no runs and no walks. Johan Dominguez whiffed a career-high ten batters while walking nobody and allowing only two earned runs through five innings. Isaiah Carranza pitched an inning of scoreless baseball with one walk and one strikeout.

Samir Dueñez snapped the tie in the seventh inning with a solo homer to right field, marking his second longball on the season.

The Tourists broke the game open in the home seventh plating five runs to take a 7-3 lead. Declan Cronin allowed a leadoff walk to Justin Dirden, who scored on a double from Enmanuel Valdez. Valdez reached third on a single from Alex Holderbach and scored on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Wilyer Abreu. The ground ball led to a catch error by Lenyn Sosa.

Cronin walked the next two batters to score Holderbach and allowed a single from Zach Daniels to bring Abreu home. Cronin was replaced by Trey Jeans, who successfully pitched out of the seventh inning.

The Dash battled back with the lumber to plate four runs in the top of the eighth inning. Yoelqui Cespedes led off with a double and Lenyn Sosa followed with a walk. Alex Destino lifted a single into right field to bring Cespedes home, and Luis Curbelo fashioned a base knock to left to drive in Sosa. Curbelo hustled to third as Luis Mieses grounded into a throwing error and came home on a fielder's choice groundout by Samir Dueñez. A Gunnar Troutwinewalk took Kyle Grullerout of the game and brought in Tommy DeJuneas for Asheville. DeJuneas allowed a single to Lazaro Leal to score Mieses and knot the game at seven.

Justin Dirden snapped the tie and led Asheville to an 8-7 victory with a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the eighth. Tommy DeJuneas (2-0) grabbed the win for Asheville. McKinley Moore (0-1) took a loss for Winston-Salem.

The Dash look to break the 1-1 series tie on Thursday night in game three. Dan Metzdorf will take the mound for Winston-Salem. Matt Ruppenthal will man the rubber for Asheville. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
