Despite Comeback, Checkers Fall Short 6-5

March 2, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Atlantic City, NJ - Saturday, March 1, 2003) The Charlotte Checkers saw their three-game winning streak snapped Saturday night in Atlantic City, as the Boardwalk Bullies prevailed 6-5 in a wild finish. The Bullies built a 6-1 lead early in the third period, only to see the Checkers score four unanswered goals at close to within one goal. Despite the Checkers best efforts late, Atlantic City was able to hang on for the win. The Charlotte loss, coupled with Trenton's 3-0 victory over Roanoke, dropped the Checkers six points behind the Titans for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northeast Division.

Despite the Checkers furious comeback, Checkers Head Coach Don MacAdam was not happy with the play of his team. "Several guys didn't show up tonight and I'm really surprised and disappointed," quoted MacAdam. "We played poorly the first two periods, and if we would have played better in one more period we could have won this game. We had a full lineup and Atlantic City was the team playing really short and they outworked us. I'd be very surprised though if our guys didn't bounce back really well in tomorrow's game:"

Stefan Rivard led the Bullies with a hat trick and an assist for a four-point night. Kurt Seher was the scoring leader for the Checkers with two goals and an assist for three points. Goaltender Colin Zulianello took the loss for the Checkers, entering the game in the third period in relief of Scott Meyer.

Charlotte wil close out their season-long, six-game roadtrip with a 3:05 p.m. face-off against Atlantic City Sunday afternoon at Boardwalk Hall.
