Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are excited to announce that forward Derek Army has been named Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for the week of April 6-12.
Army, 24, put the wraps on a stellar first professional season, which saw him get named to the ECHL's All-Rookie Team. Last week, the Nailers took the ice for four crucial games, with their season on the line, and thanks to the contributions of Derek and his teammates, they were able to win all four, earning a berth in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. The former Providence College Friar recorded at least one point in all four games, starting with the opening goal in Wednesday's 2-1 win at Reading. On Friday, Army's assist on David Makowski's tally tied the score, as Wheeling rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Elmira, 3-1. Saturday's helper also came on a tying goal, as the Nailers once again defeated the Jackals, 5-3. Finally, on Sunday, Derek snatched a goal and an assist in the club's 4-2 triumph at Brampton, giving him final totals of two goals, three assists, and five points in the four contests.
The North Kingstown, RI native saw brief action in Wheeling last spring, as he collected three goals and four points in four games, following his four-year college career in Providence. In 76 career games as a Nailer, Army has accumulated 32 goals, 38 assists, and 70 points, and was the team leader in goals with 29 during the 2014-15 season.
On behalf of Army, a case of pucks will be donated to the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 31,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
Army becomes the third Nailer to win Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week in 2014-15, joining Riley Brace and Sahir Gill.
Derek Army and the Nailers will begin their North Division Semi-Final Series against the Toledo Walleye on Thursday night at 8:15 at Huntington Center. Games three, four, and five will take place at WesBanco Arena on April 22nd, 24th, and 25th (if necessary).
The Nailers will play a maximum of three home games during their opening round playoff series against Toledo. Fans can get a free kids ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket at the Nailers office for game three on April 22nd. McDonald's Friends & Family Tickets will be available for games four and five (if necessary) on April 24th and 25th, giving fans the opportunity to receive four tickets, four hats, and four McDonald's Value Meal coupons for $39.99.
