Rapid City Rush News Release
(RAPID CITY, SD) - A pivotal game two in a three game in three night set was played in Denver Coliseum on Saturday night. The Denver Cutthroats looked to avenge their loss to the Rapid City Rush back in the Black Hills from last night on home ice, and would return the favor in the sixty minute bout. The Cutthroats would hand the Rush their third shutout loss of the season behind former Rush goaltender John Griggs, who stopped all 34 shots thrown his way.
Scoring late in the first period for the Cutthroats was A.J. Gale, whose second goal in as many games in consecutive nights against the Rush with 2:50 remaining in the opening frame. The Cutthroats would take the 1-0 lead into the second period and cash in once more to extend their lead. 6:34 into the second period, Daniel Barczuk would deflect a shot from Lee Moffie past Tim Boron to give the home side a 2-0 advantage. Despite 21 Rush shots through forty minutes, they would be unable to get on the scoreboard. The Rush would keep themselves in the game by killing off a five-minute major in the middle of the third period. The Rush would then take three of their six power plays in the third, but Griggs would stone each opportunity taken by the Rush. On the final Rush power play with just over three minutes left, Boron would be pulled for an extra attacker and Vincent Arseneau would take advantage of the empty net, giving the Cutthroats an eventual 3-0 win and John Griggs first career shutout.
Tim Boron stopped 29 shots on the game, while receiving his eleventh loss of the season (24-11-1). After 3 Denver power play goals the night before, both teams went a combined 0/9, 6 of those awarded to the Rush. The Rush recent winning streak ends at four games with their third shutout loss of the season, handed to them by former Rush goaltender John Griggs. Tomorrow night is the final showdown between both rivals, slated for 4 PM MST in Denver Coliseum.
