Sundogs' Third Period Comeback Not Enough in 6-4 Loss

Arizona Sundogs News Release

Allen, Texas - The Arizona Sundogs' third period comeback was not enough to steal the win from the Allen Americans after they scored four goals in the opening period Saturday night at the Allen Event Center. Despite putting up three goals in the final frame the Sundogs fell 6-4.

The Arizona Sundogs struggled to find their foot hold in the first period after the Americans scored their first three goals in less than eight minutes. Jonathan Lessard struck first for Allen following his two point night on Friday against the Sundogs. 3:25 into the first he ripped the puck top shelf, past goalie Chris Rawlings grabbing the lead. 40 seconds later Ben Power came in with another top shelf goal with assist from Anthony Maiani and following that was Greger Hanson at the 7:38 mark from Bruce Graham and Spencer Asuchak. Garrett Clarke finally put Arizona on the board while on the power play with 5:15 left in the first 20 minutes. Mark Isherwood and Kevin Baker picked up the assists. Power posted his second goal from Lavoie and Lessard allowing them a three goal lead at the end of the first period. Lessard posted his second goal and third point of the night 17:39 into the second to further their lead by four goals. Lessard's second period goal held up to be the game winner.

The third period came alive for the Sundogs when Limpright collected a shorthanded after the Sundogs were sent a five minute power play when Garrett Klotz was given a fighting major at the end of the second. Alex Tuckerman tallied Arizona's third goal halfway through the period with assists from Johan Ryd and Riley Emmerson. With less than a minute to go in regulation Shawn Limpright posted his second goal of the night in hopes of tying the game. But with an empty Arizona net for the extra attacker Jamie Schaafsma scored to solidifying their win.

The game didn't come without its share of penalties with a combined 41 minutes being accessed in the opening period. Garrett Clarke received a 10 minute match penalty after he was called for attempt to injure.

Rawlings tallied the loss for the Sundogs making 25 saves of 30 shots. Arizona outshot Allen 34-31. Both teams received five man-advantages and the Sundogs were the only team to capitalize scoring the lone power play goal of the game.

The Sundogs return to the road as they head to Wichita as they take on the Thunder Sunday at 5:00pm at the INTRUST Bank Arena.
