July 23, 2008 - Texas League (TL1)
Arkansas Travelers News Release
Hammons Field, Springfield, Missouri - Dan Denham set the tone on Wednesday night and the Travs responded with a 4-2 victory over the Springfield Cardinals. Denham (8-8) struck out a season-high nine batters over seven solid innings allowing just two runs on five base hits. The Travs got a three-hit effort from Adam Greenberg and a tie-breaking home run by Corey Smith (15) in the fourth inning. The Travs finally solved the puzzle that was Jess Todd (3-4) scoring four runs against the Cards ace on eight hits in 4.1 innings.
Denham retired the first five batters he faced until giving up a two-out solo home run to Mark Shorey (9) in the second inning.
Todd allowed just one hit over the first three innings, but the Travs got to him for three runs in the fourth. Chris Pettit blooped a leadoff base hit to right field and took second base for a double when Shorey overran the ball. Brian Stavisky knocked Pettit home with a single to right field then Corey Smith belted a two-run homer on the next pitch for a 3-1 Travs lead.
Todd lasted into the fifth inning but was pulled after allowing his fourth run. Greenberg hit a leadoff single then stole second base and advanced to third when Matt Pagnozzi's throw bounced off his foot. Pettit's second base hit, a single to left field, knocked in Greenberg for a 4-1 Travs lead.
Denham had retired 12 of 15 batters when the Cards inched closer on a home run by Jose Martinez (7) to leadoff the fifth. He battled back though and set down 9 of the final 11 men he faced.
The Travs had LHP Barret Browning strike out the side in the eighth inning before turning the game over to RHP Ryan Aldridge in the ninth. He issued a leadoff walk, but got Shorey to hit a soft liner to shortstop. Wil Ortiz caught Andrew Brown off first base for a double play. Aldridge pitched around a double and another walk to strike out Matt Pagnozzi to seal the win.
Time of game was 2:41 and the paid attendance was 5,347.
