New England Revolution News Release
Foxborough, Mass. - New England Revolution midfielders Clint Dempsey and Shalrie Joseph have been selected to the MLS All-Star Game "First XI", Major League Soccer announced today. The MLS All-Stars will face English Premier League champions Chelsea FC at 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 5 at the Chicago Fire's Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.
Dempsey and Joseph, two of the five midfielders named to the team, were among the top vote-getters when the final votes were culled. Online fan voting accounted for 25 percent of the final vote, media 25 percent, coaches and management 25 percent and players 25 percent. The Revolution is one of just three teams with multiple selections.
The selection is Dempsey's third in his three-season career, also earning all-star nods in 2004 and 2005. This is also Joseph's third all-star selection, joining Dempsey on the all-star squads in both of the last two seasons.
In 2006, Dempsey made an international name for himself when he was the only U.S. player to score a goal at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In nine MLS games this season, Dempsey has scored four goals and assisted on two others, while leading the Revs to a 3-1-0 mark since his return from the World Cup.
Joseph, who is one of only five Revs players to start all 17 games this season, is one of the league's top midfielders. The defensive specialist has also scored three goals this season and added one assist while helping the Revs to MLS' third-lowest goals against average (1.24).
MLS will announce the full 18-man roster for the 2006 MLS All-Star Game - in addition to 14 alternates - will be announced on Monday, July 17. Because of the competitive nature of the All-Star match with Chelsea FC, the players voted to the "First XI" may not be the actual starters for the game. MLS All-Star head coach Peter Nowak (D.C. United) will select the starting 11 based on player availability and tactics.
Due to the rescheduling of the All-Star game from its prior date a week earlier, players from the New England Revolution and Chivas USA will not participate as they play a regular season game Aug. 6 that is part of a double header with FC Barcelona and Chivas de Guadalajara.
