Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - The Baysox (31-35) offense managed just three hits in a 9-1 loss to the Harrisburg Senators (38-32) Tuesday night. Harrisburg starter Paul Demny threw seven shut out innings to shut down the Baysox potent offense, surrendering just one hit.
Playing in Bowie on a Major League rehab assignment Tuesday, Orioles outfielder Nolan Reimold went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts as the designated hitter.
"First two at-bats, I was searching for it," Reimold said. "The third at-bat I felt a lot better. I got to a full count and I thought I had a pretty good swing. Stayed over that fastball, it just didn't carry."
With help from two wild pitches from Baysox starter Eddie Gamboa, Harrisburg took the early lead in the top of the third inning. Rick Hague reached on a fielding error by first baseman Seth Loman to lead off the inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Johnson. Hague moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on a double to left field by Brian Goodwin. Goodwin made it to third base on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch to give the Senators the 2-0 lead.
The Senators extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Steven Souza was hit by a pitch and he moved to third base on a double down the left field line from Jerad Head. Jimmy Van Ostrand plated both runners with a single to left field and Justin Bloxom followed with a two-run home run over the right field fence to make the score 6-0.
Harrisburg piled on three more runs in the top of the ninth inning against reliever Oliver Drake. Bloxom drew a lead off walk and moved to second base on a single to right field from Sandy Leon. With two outs, Josh Johnson walked to load the bases and Brian Goodwin followed with a single to right field that plated one run. Two more runs came home when Souza reached on a force attempt and fielding error by Niuman Romero to make the score 9-0.
The Baysox got one run back in the bottom of the ninth inning against Harrisburg reliever Tyler Herron to avoid the shutout. Romero hit a one out single to left field and scored on a double to center field by Aaron Baker to make the score 9-1.
Gamboa pitched seven innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out five and walking one in the loss. Gamboa also threw two wild pitches. Drake pitched two innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out three and walking two.
Demny picked up the win for Harrisburg, pitching seven shutout innings and allowing just one hit while striking out six and walking three.
RHP Mike Wright (6-0, 3.92) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the second game in a three game home series against the Harrisburg Senators. He will be opposed by RHP Taylor Jordan (5-0, 0.66).
