CHARLESTON, S.C. - Adam Gaylord's bases-loaded RBI walk snapped a seventh-inning tie, and the Delmarva bullpen held off the RiverDogs, as the Shorebirds edged Charleston, 6-5, in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of a crowd of 4,723 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Delmarva upped its mark to 7-9 this half and 42-44 overall with the win, while Charleston fell to 7-9 and 33-53.

Gary Sanchez homered for the second night in a row to give Charleston a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The 18-year old Dominican catcher hammered his ninth long ball of the campaign just over the left-centerfield fence on a 3-2 pitch from Delmarva starter Jacob Pettit.

RiverDogs' starter Jose A. Ramirez held the Shorebird hitless through the first three frames, but ran into trouble in the fourth, as Delmarva moved in front, 3-1.

Ty Kelly ripped a line-drive single to right field leading off the inning, and moved to second on a single by Mike Flacco. Ramirez then lost his control, uncorking two wild pitches to force home Kelly and push Flacco all the way to third. Jeremy Nowak proceeded to untie the game, unloading on a Ramirez fastball and launching a two-run laser over the right-centerfield wall for his second home run of the campaign.

Charleston drew even with two markers versus Pettit in the last of the fourth inning. Jeff Farnham grounded a single through the left side of the infield and eventually came home to cut the deficit to one, when Jose Toussen reached on a throwing error by Delmarva catcher Michael Ohlman.

With Anderson Feliz batting, Toussen appeared to be picked off by Pettit, but a balk was called instead to extend the inning. Feliz smoked the very next pitch to the left-field corner for a RBI double, driving home Toussen to knot the score at 3-3.

The two-run rally took Ramirez off the hook, as the right-hander lasted only 4.0 innings, surrendering the three runs on five hits, while fanning five.

Nathan Forer entered in relief of Ramirez and nearly worked around a pair of walks unscathed, but Delmarva was able to pick up a two-out hit to regain the advantage at 5-3. Ohlman delivered the base knock, driving in two runs with a double just past the grasp of a diving Mike Ferraro in right field.

The see-saw affair continued in the bottom of the fifth, as Ramon Flores tied the game at 5-5 with one swing of the bat, powering his eighth jack of the year clear of the right-centerfield wall.

Pettit worked 5.0 innings, yielding the five runs on ten hits and a walk, striking out two in the process.

Tommy Kahnle (1-3) followed Forer out of the RiverDogs bullpen and notched a scoreless sixth, but scuffled with his command in the seventh, issuing a single and three free passes as the Shorebirds seized a 6-5 lead. Gaylord drew the final walk, driving home Kelly, who had stroked a one-out single.

David Walters walked a tightrope to lock up the 6-5 win and record his league-leading 20th save of the year in the ninth. Walters dismissed the first two batters easily, but Sanchez singled and Flores doubled to put men at second and third for Kelvin De Leon. With the winning runs in scoring position, De Leon flew out to Nowak in left, as the Shorebirds evened the series at a game apiece.

Will Startup (1-0) earned the victory in his first game with Delmarva, working scoreless sixth and seventh innings, while permitting just one hit and striking out one.
