
Shorebirds Bullpen tosses four scoreless innings

Charleston, S.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (42-44, 7-9) benefitted from three consecutive walks in the seventh inning to score the go-ahead run en route to a 6-5 win over the Charleston RiverDogs on Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark. The combination of Will Startup, Randy Henry and David Walters combined to shutout the RiverDogs over the final four innings.
The RiverDogs were first to strike in the second inning. Gary Sanchez connected on his second homer in as many nights to give the RiverDogs a 1-0 lead.
The Shorebirds took their first lead in the fourth. Ty Kelly and Mike Flacco delivered back-to-back flare singles. Then, two wild pitches by Jose Ramirez scored Kelly to tie the game at 1-1. Jeremy Nowak followed with his second homer of the season to right-center field to give the âBirds a 3-1 edge.
In the bottom of the fourth, the RiverDogs tied the contest at 3-3. Jeff Farnham singled to open the inning. Then, Mike Ferraro singled to advance Farnham to second. Jose Mojica then grounded into a double play to advance Farnham to third. Jose Toussen dropped a bunt in front of the plate and Michael Ohlman's throw to first pulled Adam Gaylord off the bag, allowing Farnham to score. Anderson Feliz followed with a double to score Toussen to tie the game.
The Shorebirds built a 5-3 lead on a two-out line drive single into right field by Michael Ohlman to score Kelly and Flacco.
The RiverDogs leveled the score in the fifth. Ramon Flores connected on a two-run homer to right field to tie the game at 5-5.
In the seventh inning, the Shorebirds were helped out by reliever Tommy Kahnle. Kelly reached on a one out single. Then, three consecutive walks to Nowak, Ohlman and Gaylord forced in Kelly to give the Shorebirds a 6-5 lead.
Will Startup tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen in his season debut with the Shorebirds. He retired six of the seven batters faced.
Randy Henry entered in the eighth inning and faced the minimum. In the ninth, David Walters stranded runners at second and third on a pop out to left field by Kelvin De Leon to end the game. Walters earned his 20th save of the season.
Shorebirds starter Jacob Pettit last five innings and allowed ten hits and three earned runs.
The Shorebirds and RiverDogs play game three of the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jarret Martin is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
