Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Asheville, NC - The Augusta GreenJackets got new second-half highs in hits and runs in a single-game and five scoreless innings of relief from Justin Schumer - returning to his college ballpark - in a 9-1 win over the Asheville Tourists on Friday night.
The GreenJackets never trailed, scoring three times in the second inning on four hits. Joel Weeks singled in a run to give the GreenJackets an early one-run lead while Bobby Haney drove home two more to push the advantage to 3-0. Weeks provided a second run-scoring single in the fourth to push the Augusta lead to four runs.
Asheville struck back in the fourth as Corey Dickerson hit his second fourth-inning solo home run in as many nights to put the Tourists on the scoreboard. Dickerson's home run allowed the Tourists' left fielder to reclaim sole possession of the South Atlantic League home run lead with 19. The Tourists put runners at first and second with one out in the fourth, but could do any more damage against Augusta starter Ryan Bradley as Bradley escaped the threat with a strikeout and a groundout.
Bradley, making his first professional start, fired four innings of one-run ball on five hits and three walks while striking out three in the no decision. UNC Asheville product Justin Schumer came on in relief and for the first time in school history, UNC Asheville alums pitched against each other in the same game as Schumer's college teammate Alan DeRatt started for Asheville. DeRatt (0-1) allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out four in the loss.
The GreenJackets ripped the game open in the sixth inning, batting around and scoring four times on five hits and a walk. Haney singled home a run, Carlos Willoughby singled home a pair and Adam Duvall singled home the fourth as the GreenJackets stretched their lead to seven runs. Duvall singled home another in the eighth to push Augusta's lead to 9-1. Eight of Augusta's nine runs scored with two outs in their respective inning.
Schumer (4-4), pitching at his old college ballpark for perhaps the last time ever, fired four scoreless innings of two-hit ball to earn the win in his first relief appearance of the season. He walked one and struck out two.
The GreenJackets, now 4-1 on their current seven-game road trip, will send Gaspar Santiago (3-3, 4.14) to the mound on Saturday in an attempt to seal the series win against Asheville's Juan Gonzalez (0-5, 11.25). First pitch will come at 6:05 p.m. from Asheville with radio pregame coverage beginning at 5:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
