Carolina Mudcats News Release

Pearl, MS --- Mississippi starting pitcher Randall Delgado pitched six perfect innings in leading the Braves past the Carolina Mudcats 6-2 at Trustmark Park on Sunday night.

Delgado (W, 2-5), a 20-year-old Panamanian, was making his seventh start at the Double-A level. He fanned nine of the first 18 batters of the game, and utilized a leaping catch by left fielder Yasser Gomez in the second to rob Jake Kahaulelio of a double in the second inning to keep his bid of perfection alive. Kris Negron arced a bunt single on the first base grass to break up the masterpiece leading off the seventh inning.

By then, the Braves (29-33) had already amassed a 4-0 advantage. Tyler Pastornicky hit a solo homer in the first against starter Jordan Hotchkiss, then the Braves scored three unearned runs in the fifth to assume the four-run advantage.

In the Mudcats' seventh, Delgado walked Sean Henry with one out, and after Mike Costanzo flew out, Denis Phipps drew a base on balls on a close 3-2 pitch to load the bases. The call subsequently ejected Braves manager Phillip Wellman, who argued the call with plate umpire Travis Carlson, and then removed Delgado from the game. Before taking Delgado out, Wellman drew a line with his index finger against the outside corner of home plate, then used his feet to cover the dish with piles of dirt before walking to the pitchers mound. Wellman initially left the dugout walking toward Carlson holding his thumb and index finger a millimeter apart, evidently representing the amount by which the pitch missed Carlson's zone.

Following the ejection, relief pitcher Yeliar Castro walked Chris Denove to force in a run, then he hit Kahaulelio to bring in another as the Mudcats closed the gap to 4-2. Jose Castro drilled a liner to short to end the frame.

In the last of the eighth, Christian Colonel hit a two-run homer in the eighth against reliever Gilbert De La Vara to push the Braves ahead 6-2.

The Braves lead the series 2-1 and the clubs conclude the season-series Monday night at 8:05 PM ET with Carolina's Travis Webb (6-8, 4.93) opposing Julio Teheran (2-2, 3.34).
