Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - In a game that was more a testament to the power of catharsis than anything else, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans finally exorcised their demons against the Salem Red Sox, using a stellar start from Randall Delgado and a huge day from Cory Harrilchak to salvage the finale of the four-game set by the score of 7-1.
Even though it was the offense that finally put a stop to the domination that Salem had displayed against the Pelicans this season, the story needs to start with Randall Delgado on the mound for the Birds. In six shutout innings, Delgado confounded the Red Sox hitters all night long, striking out five while walking just one. Thanks to the offensive outburst, Delgado earned just his third victory of the season even though his ERA of 2.82 still stands at second best in the league.
Delgado earned that victory thanks to an offense that took it to Sox starter Stolmy Pimentel. In Pimentel's last start against the Birds at BB&T Coastal Field, he threw six perfect innings en route to yet another Salem victory, but he was far from perfect on this night. Sammy Sime got the scoring started in the bottom of the second when he laced a two-out single to left field, scoring Travis Jones and giving the Birds their first lead of the series.
Two innings later, it was Travis Jones again doing the offensive damage as the second baseman blasted his sixth home run of the season high into the left field bleachers to give the Birds a 2-0 lead. Jones drove home another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0, and that's when the Pelicans finally broke the game wide open.
In the seventh, Sime led off with a walk against reliever Zach Hammes. L.V. Ware followed with a ground ball to the second baseman who flipped to second base for an apparent out. However, the field umpire ruled that shortstop Ryan Dent didn't have his foot on the bag, making everybody safe. Cole Miles then reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out. Two batters later, it was Harrilchak, already 3-for-3 on the evening with a single, double, and triple, facing Hammes. After fouling off four good fastballs from Hammes, Harrilchak got a pitch he liked and roped it into the left-center field gap for a double, clearing the bases and running the score to 6-0.
The Pelicans notched another run in the frame when left fielder Alex Hassan inexplicably dropped a pop up off the bat of Mike Jones, allowing Harrilchak to come around with the Birds' seventh run.
Brett Oberholtzer pitched the final three innings, striking out four to pick up his second career save.
The Pelicans finish up the homestand with a 3-4 record and now move to 2-12 against Salem this season. The team will head out on the road for a six-game series with Winston-Salem and Wilmington with game one with the Dash set for 7 ET tomorrow.
