Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League announced on Tuesday that Wilmington Blue Rocks third baseman Jamie Romak has been named the league's Player of the Week for the period ranging from June 28 - July 4. It marks the seventh time in 2010 a Rock has been honored by the league office and the third occasion for Romak, with all three coming since the start of June. No other Carolina Leaguer has been honored more than twice this season. Michael Montgomery, Alex Caldera and John Lamb have all been named CL Pitcher of the Week in 2010, with Montgomery grabbing that honor twice in a row to begin the year. Lamb received his accolades last week from the league office.
During the week, Romak hit .519 (14-for-27) with three extra-base hits, three RBIs and eight runs scored. His OPS checked in at 1.285. On the year, the Canadian has batted .305 and shares the team lead with seven home runs and 48 RBIs. His batting average ranks eighth in the loop and his .389 on-base percentage ties him for fourth.
The season has seen a remarkable turnaround for Romak. On May 22, he was hitting .196. Since then, no Carolina Leaguer is within 75 points of his .423 batting average, including four of his dingers and 27 of his RBIs. His OPS in that time leads the field by 200 points at 1.133.
No team has claimed as many weekly honors as the Blue Rocks. Winston-Salem has earned the notoriety five times for runner-up status. Within Wilmington's Northern Division, Lynchburg and Frederick have enjoyed the call once apiece and Potomac has not garnered it.
Romak has split his time between the infield and outfield defensively this year. The former Pirates and Braves farmhand, who spent parts of 2008 and 2009 in the Carolina League with the Lynchburg Hillcats, has made seven starts at first base, 42 at third base, 15 in left field, eight in right field and nine as the designated hitter. He has played mostly third since the start of May.
Wilmington concludes a four-game series at Potomac tonight at 7:03 p.m. before shifting its road trip to Lynchburg for three games starting tomorrow evening. The Blue Rocks return to the Riverfront for a seven-game homestand starting on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. It will be a "Twilight" theme night at the park and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Blue Rocks t-shirt, courtesy of the Delaware Lottery.
Remember, for any Saturday game that you purchase at least two or more tickets to you may "Super Size" your order for $10. That includes an $8 Quarry Team Store gift card, two free hot dogs and two free sodas with an actual value of $15. Offer valid only by purchase at Blue Rocks ticket windows or by calling 302-888-BLUE.
