Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Woodbridge, VA - One night after suffering a shutout setback, three Wilmington Blue Rocks (40-43, 8-5) pitchers returned the favor in a 2-0 blanking of the Potomac Nationals (36-46, 5-7). Starter Ivor Hodgson (5-6) tossed six scoreless innings for a triumphant return to the rotation. Brendan Lafferty hurled two bridge innings and Barry Bowden bolted down his team-leading seventh save with a minimum-faced ninth. The Rocks' fifth shutout win of the season is also their second of the week. It allowed the Rocks to split the four-game series and take sole possession of first place.
The Blue Crew overcame multiple baserunning gaffes on an ugly night of baseball. A caught stealing and a runner gunned down at home plate muted three first-inning hits as four total Rocks batted and none scored. Potomac nearly assembled a carbon copy of that futility, with a caught stealing helping to hold three baserunners in check and the P-Nats scoreless.
Jarrod Dyson doubled in Rey Navarro in the third and Eric Hosmer batted in a run in the fifth. Hosmer's blow appeared to be a two-run double, but Fernando Garcia was put out at third base on appeal. That also cut Hosmer's would-be double to a single due to rule 10.06b.
The extra run and bag proved unnecessary though thanks to Wilmington pitching. Hodgson scattered five hits and three walks over his six frames. Potomac's Evan Bronson (3-6) received the tough-luck loss despite allowing just two runs over seven innings.
The Blue Rocks' seven-game road trip shifts to Lynchburg where Wilmington begins a three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Bryan Paukovits (1-1, 11.74) gets the nod for the Blue Crew against right-hander Lance Janke (3-6, 7.08).
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
Shortstop Christian Colon was a late scratch in the two-hole. Fernando Garcia took his place in the lineup and played second base. The originally penciled in second baseman, Rey Navarro, instead started at short. It marked the second time on the series a first-round pick was a last-second scratch for the Blue Rocks.
Eric Hosmer finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI, his team-leading 49th.
Navarro doubled on a two-hit night and scored both of the team's runs.
Potomac stranded 10 men on base including eight in scoring position, and went 0-for-10 with runners at second and/or third.
