CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League and Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League, announced this afternoon that forwards Jason Deitsch and Mike Wirll have signed to play with German hockey teams this fall.
Deitsch, the first Cincinnati native to play for the Cyclones, led the club in scoring with 71 points. Jason collected 26 goals and 45 assists for 71 points. He collected 16 multi-point games, including a pair of four point efforts. Deitsch's shorthanded goal in the third period of the Jan. 9 game at Dayton was the difference in a 3-2 triumph. Jason also spent six games with Wilkes Barre/Scranton of the AHL.
Wirll, joined the Cyclones as part of a six player swap on Feb. 14. Mike led the ECHL in goal scoring with 47 and produced 76 points for the season. His highlight game came at Columbia on April 3, scoring a natural hat trick in the opening ten minutes of a 3-2 win over the Inferno. In 26 games with the Cyclones, Wirll netted 16 goals and ten assists for 26 points, including eight multi-point games.
"This is an opportunity for Jason and Mike to see a different culture and play hockey," Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. "The style of hockey in Germany will suit both their offensive talents. We wish them both the best and thank them for helping put Cincinnati hockey back on the sports map here in the Queen city."
Deitsch has signed with EHC Munchen, where he will join another former Cyclone player, Erich Goldmann (1998-99). EHC Munchen finished with a 29-18-5 record and sixth place finish in the 2. Bundesliga (Germany's second division of hockey). Wirll has inked with EV Regensburg, which finished right behind EHC Munchen, with a 27-22-3 record. In the last month, nine ECHL players have signed with German teams.
