Alaska Aces News Release
The 2011 Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces released two players, and were assigned a new defenseman on Wednesday as they finalized their opening day roster, Head Coach Rob Murray announced. St. Louis Blues product, David Shields is the newest member to join the Aces, who will open up their season on Friday and Saturday night, hosting the Las Vegas Wranglers. Forward Kevin Petovello and goaltender Wylie Rogers were released by the team, trimming the roster to 20 active players. On Friday night, the Aces will raise their 2011 Kelly Cup Championship banner as part of the opening night, pre-game festivities. Make sure you are in attendance for the game. Shields, 20, becomes the youngest man on the Aces roster. He played the last four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Erie Otters. The 6'3", 218 lbs. blue liner was selected by St. Louis in the sixth round (168th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Last season he contributed a career high 27 points (6g, 21a) in 61 games, and added five points (g, 4a) in seven post-season games.
Shields becomes the seventh active defenseman on the Aces roster, joining Chad Anderson, Brandon Gentile, Kane Lafranchise, Bryan Miller, Russ Sinkewich, and Steve Ward. The opening day forwards are Matt Ambroz, Chris Bruton, Ethan Cox, Wes Goldie, Zach Harrison, Dan Kissel, Nick Mazzolini, Garry Nunn, Tyler Ruegsegger, Patrick Schafer, Brian Swanson.
The Aces opening day goaltenders are Gerald Coleman and Andrew Hayes. Defenseman Alex Dzielski has been placed on the 21-day injured reserve list. Earlier this week the Aces released forwards Phillip Ischi, Jon Higgins, and Jordan Kremyr.
In other Aces news, veteran forward and Eagle River, AK native, Brian Swanson has been named the 2011-2012 Aces Team Captain. The alternates at home will be Bryan Miller and Ethan Cox, with Wes Goldie and Chad Anderson serving as the road alternates.
