Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs announced on Thursday that defenseman Nathan Mayes (2006) has joined the club as an Affiliated Player. Mayes was the Chiefs' third-round (51st overall) pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.
A 6-foot-3 rearguard from Salmon Arm, B.C., Mayes joins Spokane from Yale Hockey Academy of the CSSHL. In 19 games with the U17 prep team this season, he has picked up four goals and 16 assists for 20 points.
Chiefs Assistant General Manager Jim Hammett described Mayes after the draft as a "very smooth skater with very good agility, especially at his size," also noting his high hockey IQ.
Mayes is the second player from the Chiefs' 2021 WHL Prospects Draft class to join the club. Defenseman Will McIsaac (2nd round) played in two games as an Affiliated Player on January 15 and 21. Other signed prospects from the 2021 class include first-overall pick Berkly Catton and second-round (41st overall) choice Luka Shcherbyna, both of whom have yet to debut in the WHL.
In a related roster move, Affiliated Player D Ben Bonni (2004) has been returned to the Selkirk Steelers (MJHL).
