
Defenseman Kroll Returns; Stingrays Add McEwan

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Johann Kroll and forward James McEwan. In keeping with club policy, details of the agreements were not disclosed.
Kroll, 27, split last season between the Stingrays and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). While with the Stingrays, the Plymouth, Minnesota, native skated in 17 games earning five points (1g, 4a) and appeared in four postseason contests scoring one goal. Since joining the Stingrays as a rookie for the 2008-09 season, Kroll has 47 points (5g, 42a) in 98 regular-season games and helped the team capture their ECHL-record third Kelly Cup championship in 2009. In addition to Hershey, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound defenseman saw AHL action with the Lake Erie Monsters, Manchester Monarchs, Grand Rapids Griffins, Syracuse Crunch and Rochester Americans over four seasons totaling six points (1g, 5a) in 70 games. Prior to turning pro, Kroll spent four years at Ohio State University grabbing five goals and 22 assists in 153 games and was a teammate of Stingrays Assistant Coach J.B. Bittner.
McEwan, 24, spent the last two seasons with the Ontario Reign of the ECHL registering six points (4g, 2a) and 226 penalty minutes in 63 games. In 2008-09, the Kelowna, British Columbia, native appeared in 59 games with the Phoenix Roadrunners (ECHL) acquiring three goals and four assists for seven points and 227 PIMs. Before joining the professional ranks, McEwan played for four seasons in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds and Kelowna Rockets recording 17 points (7g, 10a) in 208 contests.
