Defenders Answer Back With Offensive Explosion, Defeat Jackals

August 11, 2009 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Just one night after they tied a season high with 12 runs in a blowout win, the New Jersey Jackals found themselves on the losing end of a one sided affair, falling to the American Defenders of New Hampshire 10-2 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday night.

The game started with promise, after the Jackals opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Marcus Sanders led off the inning with a standup double and scored moments later after first baseman Matt Lauderdale lined an RBI-single. After designated hitter Myron Leslie struck out and shortstop Mike DeJesus walked, right fielder Quinn Stewart deposited an RBI-single of his own to make is a 2-0 contest.

New Jersey starter Stuart Pomeranz would surrender a run in the second, courtesy of an RBI-double from New Hampshire center fielder Edward Ovalle, but was still looking good early. The Defenders would grab the lead from the right-hander, putting up two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. Pomeranz (5-6) allowed the first three batters to reach base in the fourth, issuing a leadoff walk to right fielder Angel Molina before first baseman Chris Kelly and designated hitters slapped back-to-back singles to score Molina and put runners at the corners. Catcher Zane Chavez would lift a sac-fly to center that scored Kelly and Molina would smack an RBI-single in the fifth to make it a 4-2 game.

The Jackals sent right-hander Seth Overbey to the mound in the sixth, but the former Toronto Blue Jays farmhand struggled in an inning and two-thirds of work. After getting two quick outs to start the inning, Overbey walked Chavez and gave up a single to third baseman Aregenis Tavarez before shortstop Matt Nandin ripped a triple that scored both base runners. The seventh wouldn't be much kinder as the Jackals reliever allowed a pair of singles to left fielder Jared Edmondson and Molina before walking Bergeron to load the bases. Ovalle grounded into a fielder's choice that scored a run and resulted in the second out of the inning before New Jersey went to the bullpen again, bringing in left-hander Mark Suchowiecki. The southpaw promptly walked Chavez and allowed and RBI-single to Tavarez, capping a four-run seventh inning for the Defenders, setting the score at 10-2.

New Hampshire starter Alex Woodson looked very strong in his fourth start of the season, allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings. The left-hander also walked five and struck out three batters to improve to 2-1 on the season. Right-hander Lucas Ledbetter came on to pitch the final three innings for the Defenders, picking up his third save of the season, allowing just a single base hit, while walking three and striking out two.

This was the first time since July 26 that the Jackals had allowed an opponent to score at least ten runs in a game. Offensively, New Jersey stranded 12 base runners, meaning the Jackals have left a total of 28 men on base in the first two games of this four-game series with New Hampshire.

New Jersey will have a quick turnaround tomorrow, with an early start against the Defenders. The Jackals will send left-hander A.J. Wideman to the mound while New Hampshire has yet to name a starter. Joey Whelan will have the live call of the game at www.jackals.com. First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m. with the pre game show starting 10 minutes prior.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. The Jackals have clinched the 2009 Can-Am League first-half title and an automatic berth in the playoffs, which begin on September 9.
