Skyhawks Recap (August 7-9)

Friday, August 7

The Skyhawks started a 3 game home stand Friday night against the American Defenders of New Hampshire. Pappas snuck a single up the middle through an infield of five defenders to drive in Jorge Moreno from third with no outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Sussex a 4-3 come-from-behind victory. Moreno led off the bottom of the inning with a hustle-double to center. Moreno moved to third on a passed ball, leading to an intentional walk to Hunt. New Hampshire then brought an outfielder to play on the shortstop side of the infield with nobody out and the winning run on third, but Pappas' seeing-eye base hit snuck into center to win it for the Skyhawks.

Greg Lane threw four innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Lane gave up just one hit, while striking out one. Luis Ramos took the loss for New Hampshire. Angel Molina blasted a three run home run in the top of the fifth to put New Hampshire ahead, 3-1. But Sussex's Chris Brown answered with a two out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, 3-3.

Saturday, August 8

Jerod Edmondson's bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth plated three runs and completed a New Hampshire comeback as the American Defenders topped the Skyhawks 5-3 on Saturday evening. Trailing 3-2 entering the ninth, New Hampshire loaded the bases and, with two outs and a 1-2 count, Edmondson lined a fastball to right center to clear the bases.

Nick Asselin gave up three runs over eight innings to garner the win for New Hampshire. Cooper Brannan pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save. Sandy Nin went 1 2/3 innings, giving up the three runs in the ninth, to take the loss.

Sussex scored two runs in the first on a groundout by John Urick and an RBI-single by Chris Brown. The Skyhawks added another in the second on a Mark Pappas RBI-double to make it a 3-1 game. Pappas finished 2-for-3 with two doubles in the losing effort for Sussex.

Sunday, August 9

Zane Chavez went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and Argenis Tavarez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to help power New Hampshire to a 5-4 win over Sussex on Sunday afternoon.

Chavez smacked an RBI-single in the top of the seventh to snap a 3-3 game and give New Hampshire a lead it would not relinquish. Chavez put the American Defenders on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun. Tavarez drilled a solo homerun in the top of the eighth to give New Hampshire a 5-3 lead.

Dave Wasylak picked up the win for New Hampshire after throwing an inning and giving up two runs on two hits. Ledbetter held the Skyhawks scoreless through the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the save. Alex Smith was saddled with the loss, giving up a run on two hits in one inning of work. Pappas was 3-for 4 with two doubles and an RBI for Sussex.
