Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - (August 11, 2009) - Brockton Rox starter RHP Jeff Long retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced while his offense racked up five runs on 14 hits and the Rox defeated the Sussex Skyhawks at Skylands Park on Tuesday night.
Long earned his fourth win of the season and snapped a personal three-game losing streak with a solid outing. He kept the Sussex offense dormant over the first six innings, stranding two runners at third base, but never really getting into serious trouble. That changed in the seventh inning however when the Skyhawks bats awakened with three straight one-out hits to chase him from the game, leading 5-1.
LHP Brad Hertzler entered from the bullpen with the bases loaded and one out. Hertzler allowed a pinch-hit single to C Ray Serrano, and then recorded the final outs of the inning against the next two hitters to keep the Rox lead intact at 5-3.
RHP Keith Noe pitched a scoreless eighth inning and closer RHP Jerry Dunn recorded his 19th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
The Rox offense took little time to show its strength. DH Clyde Williams hit a two-run home run in the first inning off of Sussex starter RHP Mike Schellinger. In the third inning, Brockton extended the lead to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly by 1B Melvin Falu, which scored CF Chris Valencia. It was one of three runs Valencia would score in the game, and one of seven times in which he has crossed home plate in this series.
2B Derek Kinsler hit his first home run with the Rox, and just his second as a pro in four seasons in the sixth inning to push the lead to 4-0. Then in the top of the seventh, Williams collected his third RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly which plated Valencia.
Valencia, LF Palmer Karr, and C Chris Grossman each had three hits in the game for the Rox.
On Wednesday night, Brockton sends RHP Wayne Lundgren (6-5, 2.53 ERA) to the mound against Sussex RHP Mike Schellinger (4-5, 4.72 ERA) for the fourth game in a five-game series. Wednesday night's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
