Erie Otters News Release
Barrie, Ontario - In a tightly contested game between two OHL division leaders, the Otters pulled past the Barrie Colts with a final-minute goal by Alex DeBrincat to win 4-3 on the road.
Barrie jumped out to the early lead 1:41 after the opening puck drop when Roy Radke netted his seventh of the season past Erie's Jake Lawr. It would take ten minutes after Radke's score, but the Otters would respond. Dylan Strome buried a wrist shot moving to his left to tie the score at one. Erie would take the lead with 5:36 on the clock. Nick Betz found Kyle Maksimovich on a two-on-one rush and Maksimovich put it past Mackenzie Blackwood on the backhand, making it 2-1. Dylan Strome made his way into the goal-scoring column for the second time, this time on the power play. His goal with 13 seconds remaining in the period allowed Erie to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
Last night, the Otters continued a four-goal first period with three scores in the second period. This night, their opponent would do the second-period scoring, as the Colts countered with a scoring surge to tie the game up at three. Andrew Mangiapane cut the Erie lead to one on a breakaway just over three minutes into the period. Mangiapane's goal would be followed up with another Barrie goal courtesy of Cordell James on the power play. James' tally tied the game 3-3 at 6:48 in the second. Perhaps the best chance in the final 13:12 of the period was another breakaway for Mangiapane, this time shorthanded with under a minute to play, but Jake Lawr made a big blocker save to keep the game even at three.
The third period began with a couple of special teams opportunities for both teams, but no goals. Good penalty killing for both teams was the story of the third period, as a combined six penalties were neutralized in the period. The deciding play in game would come with just 51 seconds remaining. Alex DeBrincat finally got one past Mackenzie Blackwood to put the Otters ahead for good 4-3. Dylan Strome and Taylor Raddysh both had assists on the game winner from DeBrincat.
Strome finished with three points (2 goals, 1 assist) and Raddysh compiled three points of his own on three assists. Jake Lawr had 23 saves in the win.
The Otters will return home to Erie Insurance Arena on Saturday for a Halloween clash with the Sarnia Sting. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
