OHL Erie Otters

DeBrincat Powers Erie to Victory

October 27, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

After back-to-back contests against Owen Sound, Erie continued its homestand on October 27 against the Barrie Colts. Alex DeBrincat moved back to center as rookie Allan McShane was allowed to compete for Canada's U17 team, and Kyle Maksimovich was slotted onto the top line's wing beside DeBrincat and Taylor Raddysh. The Otters emerged victorious against Barrie despite taking six penalties, winning the game 5-2.

The Otters, on the penalty kill early off a Darren Raddysh crosscheck, scored the first goal of the game. Alex DeBrincat, second on Erie in scoring, rushed into the zone to chip in a loose puck in front of Barrie goaltender David Ovsjannikov. Taylor Raddysh, whose shorthanded effort resulted in the rebound to DeBrincat, picked up an assist on the play for his 25th point of the season. Two minutes later, DeBrincat scored again when he slipped a hard shot beneath Ovsjannikov's pad and in. Taylor Raddysh received another assist on the play, along with Kyle Maksimovich. The Otters continued to dominate possession, rarely giving the Colts an opportunity to put a shot on net. Their puck possession paid off with a third goal, as Kyle Pettit deflected a shot into the net for a power play goal and the 3-0 lead. Barrie increased their offensive pressure after the Otters trio of tallies, forcing Erie goaltender Troy Timpano to make a series of saves in close on the crease to preserve the lead. The Otters closed out the first period with a commanding 3-0 lead and outshot the Colts a staggering 23-10.

Erie jumped at the chance to increase their lead early in the second period; the Otters' first line executed a textbook passing play, finishing when Taylor Raddysh received a tape-to-tape feed from Kyle Maksimovich and fired a shot over Ovsjannikov's glove. Then, Erie's Brett Neumann, alone in front of Barrie's goal, took a pass from a falling Patrick Fellows in the corner and scored five-hole, giving Erie the 5-0 lead halfway through the second period. Though the game was truly beginning to escape from them, Barrie was unwilling to go quietly: Giordano Finoro scored on the power play late in the period to put them on the scoreboard. Erie ended the second period up 5-1.

Erie's undisciplined play caught up with them in the third period. After taking four consecutive penalties, Barrie's Anthony Stefano converted on one of them to pull the Colts into a 5-2 contest. Barrie's further attempts on goal were stymied by Troy Timpano, however, and the Colts were unable to close the gap Erie had created in the first period; the Otters would win the game 5-2.

For Erie, Kyle Maksimovich registered three assists; Taylor Raddysh scored a goal and two assists; and Alex DeBrincat scored two goals and two assists for four points on the night. Troy Timpano made 24 saves on 26 shots in net and was largely responsible for killing 4 of 6 Erie penalties. Timpano is undefeated in seven starts this season. For the Barrie loss, David Ovsjannikov faced 40 shots and saved 45.

Erie continues its homestand on October 29 against Saginaw.
