State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Alex De Leon contributed a pair of hits, including his second professional triple, but the State College Spikes dropped a 3-1 decision to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
De Leon singled in the first inning and tripled to right-center field in the seventh. The State College (26-12) designated hitter also walked in the third inning, helping to extend the inning so Jake Stone could knock in Darren Seferina with the lone Spikes run.
Stone also extended his on-base streak to 19 games with the RBI single. The streak is just seven games behind Rowan Wick's Spikes-record string. Wick did not play in Tuesday's game.
Seferina reached base three times for State College with a single and two walks, and also stole a base. Chase Raffield and Jhohan Acevedo each doubled for the Spikes.
Trey Nielsen (3-1) started and took the loss for State College. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over four innings of work. Nielsen struck out four batters in the effort.
Mahoning Valley (16-22) scored its first two runs in the fourth inning, as Leo Castillo plated one run with his RBI single and then scored thanks to a pair of wild pitches.
The Scrappers added a run in the seventh on Greg Allen's run-scoring single. Allen went 3-for-5 on the night with a triple and two steals.
Castillo and Bradley Zimmer each contributed two hits for Mahoning Valley as well.
Scrappers reliever Edward Estrella (2-0) got the win after tossing two scoreless innings as the second pitcher on the mound. Estrella gave up a hit and two walks. Starter Cameron Hill allowed a run on five hits and three walks over four innings of work.
J.P. Feyereisen (1) pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save. The victory stretched the Scrappers' winning streak to five games.
State College left 12 runners on base in the contest. The loss marked the first time this year that the Spikes have suffered three consecutive defeats.
Wednesday, the Spikes and Scrappers meet at 7:05 p.m. to complete their two-game mini-series. State College will send right-hander Cody Schumacher (1-0) to the mound to face Mahoning Valley left-hander Sean Brady (2-1).
