Tigers Lose a Nail Biter to ValleyCats

Norwich, CT - The Tri-City ValleyCats (26-12) defeated the Connecticut Tigers (19-19) by a score of 4-3 Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium. In the top of the ninth inning with the game tied at 3-3, C Alfredo Gonzalez (2-3) on third base, LF Derek Fisher (1-5) hit what ended up being the winning infield RBI single off of Tigers RHP Paul Voelker (0-1) which brought Gonzalez in to score and gave the ValleyCats the 4-3 lead.

The Tigers struck early in the baseball game as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a two-run second inning. On a single by 3B Joey Pankake (3-4), RF Mike Gerber (1-4) scored on a throwing error committed by ValleyCats RF Ryan Bottger (0-5) which gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. LF Rashad Brown added an RBI single in the inning to take the two run lead. The Tigers were held without a run scored until the eighth inning when Pankake hit a an RBI single that tied the game at 3-3 as it was SS Garrett Mattlage (1-4) who scored the tying run.

RHP Tanner Bailey suffered a no decision in his shortest outing the season so far as he went only four innings while allowing three runs on five hits, one walk, hit two batters, and struck out one. Gonzalez got the ValleyCats on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning with a solo homerun his second of the year. In the fourth inning with the bases loaded, CF Bobby Boyd (1-2) was hit by a pitch that brought in the tying run at 2-2. Bottger followed with a go ahead RBI groundout which gave Tri-City their first lead at 3-2.

The Tigers and ValleyCats wrap up their two-game series tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at Dodd Stadium. Tomorrow is Camp Day! Youth summer recreation or summer youth programs will be in attendance.
