Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

FARGO, ND- The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (27-25) won 7-6 in walk-off fashion for the second time in three nights over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (27-25).

Keury De La Cruz hit three doubles to thwart a great effort by Anthony Checky and the RailCats who had the game all but won.

Checky had a bases clearing double with two outs in the top of the 12th inning to give Gary SouthShore the 6-4 advantage. Travis McGee came in to pitch the bottom half and gave up a single and a walk to put runners on the corners. Then, De La Cruz stepped up and smashed a double that scored one run. The next batter, Josh Mazzola, hit a single that scored De La Cruz and one more RedHawk to complete Fargo's comeback.

The RedHawks won in the bottom of the 9th on a Kes Carter home run two games ago. Their late-inning heroics struck again to hand the RailCats their sixth loss in the last 10 games.

The 12-inning game was the 11th extra-innings contest of the year for the RailCats. They are now 6-5 in when going to extra frames. This was the team's fifth straight game decided by one-run.

Richard Castillo started on the hill for the RailCats and struggled out of the gate. The right-hander gave up a solo homer to Ryan Pineda in the 1st inning and allowed three runs in the 2nd. Castillo and the RailCats' pitchers did not surrender another run until the 12th inning.

Frank Martinez opened the scoring for the RailCats in the 3rd inning. The third baseman came up with a two-out single that scored EJ Devarie and Brennan Metzger.

The next score wasn't until the 8th when Matt Petrone drew a bases loaded walk to pull the RailCats to within one run at 4-3. After a Devarie strikeout, the rookie Checky stepped in as the last chance for the Cats to tie the game in the inning. The Portage-native slapped a base hit that scored Randy Santiesteban and evened the score.

Taylor Black and Jorge de Leon combined to throw six innings of shutout relief before McGee failed to shut the door in the 9th. McGee was charged with the loss and Patrick Mincey earned the win for Fargo.

Checky, Metzger, Martinez, and Jaime Del Valle all had multi-hit days for the RailCats. Checky recorded a game-high three RBIs. The RailCats left 15 runners on the base, bringing their season total to a league-leading 451.

The series finale between the Cats and Hawks is tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 PM. Coverage begins at 12:05 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
