Oshawa Generals News Release
Calvin de Haan is getting a chance to show he belongs with the best players in all of junior hockey.
The Generals' defenceman was among 36 players named by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League on Wednesday to take part in Canada's National Junior selection camp from December 12-16, 2009 in Regina, Sask.
The invitation is yet another honour for the Carp, Ontario native, who played an extra year of Tier 11 hockey before joining the Generals last season. After an outstanding rookie season in which he picked up 63 points in 68 games, de Haan was selected in the first round of the NHL draft (12th overall) by the New York Islanders.
"We're pleased and excited for Calvin to be a part of the selection camp for Team Canada," Oshawa General manager/Coach Chris DePiero says. "His development over the last year and a bit that he's been with our organization has been huge.
"Calvin is an outstanding player and an outstanding young man. He came on the radar after a terrific season here last year and playing in the Top Prospects Game, and to get an honour like this is pretty special."
Of the 36 players invited, 32 of them play in the Canadian Hockey League. Seven of them are returning players - having won gold medals at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa. Thirty-one of the players named to the selection camp roster were drafted in either the 2008 or 2009 NHL Entry Draft, including fourteen first-round selections and six second-round picks.
Hockey Canada may still add additional players prior to the opening of the selection camp on December 12, in the event that any other NHL teams loan Canada's National Junior Team junior-aged eligible players currently playing in the NHL.
"On behalf of Hockey Canada, I would like to congratulate the players named today, along with their club teams, their parents and all the minor hockey coaches who helped them along with the way to get where they are today, " said Brad Pascall, Hockey Canada's senior director of men's national teams, in a release. "As we look forward to a very competitive camp, I would also like to make special note of the great partnership that Hockey Canada has with the Canadian Hockey League, and thank CHL teams and fans for their support of the Program of Excellence."
The roster includes 12 players from the Ontario Hockey League, 10 from the Western Hockey League, and 10 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Players and staff will travel to Regina on Saturday, December 12.
Two red-white intrasquad games and one game against a team comprised of CIS players from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina will be held before the team is named at the conclusion of the selection camp in Regina. Canada's National Junior Team will play in three exhibition games prior to the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Canada will play its first game of the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship on Boxing Day, December 26 versus Latvia, a game that will be broadcast LIVE by TSN/RDS and on The FAN Radio Network (check local listings).
Canada has medaled at eleven straight IIHF World Junior Championships including gold medal performances in the last five championships - 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, silver medals in 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004 and bronze medals in 2000 and 2001.
The Generals and de Haan are in Brampton on Thursday night and host the Belleville Bulls on RONA Whitby Teddy bear Toss Night Friday, Dec. 4 at 7:35 p.m.
