Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, Va. - Will Bynum recorded his second straight double-double, scoring a team-high 28 points and game-high 10 assists to lead all five Roanoke Dazzle starters in double figures on their way to a 113-102 victory over the over the Albuquerque Thunderbirds.
The Dazzle came out with a lot of energy and controlled the tempo for much of the game, which produced many quality looks for the Dazzle. As a team the Dazzle shot 60.3% from the field, which included a 10 for 11 shooting performance from Anthony Grundy on his way to 27 points. Grundy also hit 5 of 6 three-point shots.
"The energy has been much better." said Dazzle coach Kent Davison. "We have to control that energy so we don't get careless with the ball. If we correct that, we have a chance to be a pretty good ball team."
Joining Bynum and Grundy in double figures for the Dazzle were Isiah Victor who scored 22 points, Peter Ramos with 18 points and a team-high 9 rebounds and Andray Blatche with 10 points.
Despite the hot shooting by the Dazzle, the Thunderbirds kept the game close by out rebounding the Dazzle, 43 to 33 which translated to a 25-2 edge in second chance points for the Thunderbirds.
"We were right there with a chance to win," said Thunderbird coach Michael Cooper. "You have to tip your hat to them (the Dazzle), they played extremely well."
The Thunderbirds got a strong performance from guard Joe Shipp who had 22 first-half points on his way to a game-high 34. Four other players joined Shipp in double figures for the Thunderbirds with 14 points from Tony Bland and 11 from Yuta Tabuse. Bryant Matthews and Chuck Hayes both recorded double-doubles for the Thunderbirds with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Matthews and 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Hayes.
With the win, the Dazzle improve to 6-8 on the season and have won back to back games for the first time this season. With the loss the Thunderbirds now drop to 7-6. These two teams will face each other again in a New Years Eve matinee game tomorrow at the Roanoke Civic Center. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
