Dazzle aim to ground Flyers in chamionship semi-final
April 11, 2006 - NBA G League (G League)
Roanoke Dazzle News Release
Roanoke, Va., April 11 - The Roanoke Dazzle will head to Fort Worth (Texas) to take on the Fort Worth Flyers in the semi-final round of the 2006 NBA Development League Championship presented by Delta, this Saturday, April 15 with game time set for 8:00 p.m. EST at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The Dazzle enters the game as the No. 4 seed after ending the regular season tied for the third best record overall at 25-23. The Florida Flame, with whom the Dazzle tied for third, owned the head-to-head tiebreak with the Dazzle thus dropping Roanoke to the lower seed.
Fort Worth finished the regular season with the best record in the league, at 28-20, earning the top seed in the playoffs in just their first season of play. The Flyers are the first expansion team in D-League history to win a regular season title.
In the regular season series between these two teams, the Dazzle had a 2-3 record against the Flyers, but recorded a 1-1 split in games played in Fort Worth.
The two teams will be significantly different from the ones that played each other during the regular season due to Gatorade Call-Ups to the NBA on both squads. The Dazzle lost their all D-League backcourt tandem of Will Bynum, to the Golden State Warriors, and Anthony Grundy, to the Atlanta Hawks. While the Flyers lost center Luke Schenscher, to the Chicago Bulls, as well as their all D-League guard Ime Udoka, to the New York Knicks.
With the departure of Bynum and Grundy, Second Team All D-League forward Isiah Victor has stepped up for the Dazzle. Victor ended the regular season ranked second in the league in both scoring, 18.8 points per game, and rebounding, 8.0 rebounds per game.
Both teams enter the contest looking to reverse their recent fortunes. Overall, the Dazzle has dropped three of their last four games while the Flyers have dropped four of their last five, including their last two.
"No matter what level, anytime you have the opportunity to play for a championship is special," said Dazzle Head Coach Kent Davison. "We are honored to have the chance to play the top team in the league. In order to be the best you have to first beat the best."
