DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Cubs (31-33) dropped the series finale against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (34-29) in extra innings by the score of 4-3. Another great start from southpaw Chris Rusin was not enough as he went seven innings of two-run baseball and striking out four batters in the no-decision.
Lakeland manufactured a run in the first inning off of Cubs starter Chris Rusin. Second baseman Brandon Douglas singled to start the game and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Rusin struck out the next two batters, but surrendered a single to designated hitter Billy Nowlin. Douglas just beat out the throw in from center fielder Brett Jackson to give the Flying Tigers the early lead.
Lakeland made it 2-0 with an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning. First baseman Rawley Bishop reached with a leadoff walk and moved to third as left fielder Ben Guez followed him with a double. Chris Rusin then induced a groundout of center fielder Chris White and got another ground ball off the bat of catcher Julio Rodriguez. It was a hot shot right to third baseman DJ LeMahieu that snuck under his glove and allowed Bishop to score. Brandon Douglas then lined into a double-play to prevent further damage.
The Cubs responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at two. Shortstop Junior Lake stroked a double to right-center field with one out to start the rally. Brett Jackson then traded places with Lake at second as he lined a double down the line to cut the defecit in half. Jackson would move to third on a wild pitch before Lakeland starter Adam Wilk retired DJ LeMahieu with a pop out. With two outs, second baseman Ryan Flaherty evened the score with an RBI-single to right field.
The Cubs were inches away from another walk-off victory as Luis Flores blasted what looked like a no-doubt home run into left field. The ball did not carry and hit off the top of the wall for a very long double. Flores was left stranded at second base as this game headed into extra innings.
Chris Siegfried (1-4) threw two perfect innings of relief in the eighth and ninth with three strikeouts. Siegfried came out in the tenth inning and could not find the strike zone. He gave up three walks and two hits in the inning with one of the hits being a two-run line drive home run off the bat of Chris White. This was White's first long ball of the season.
The Cubs did not go down without a fight as Junior Lake led the bottom of the tenth off with a walk and Brett Jackson followed him up with a double that hit off the top of the wall in right field. With nobody out and two runners in scoring position the Cubs could only bring home one run off a Ryan Flaherty sacrifice fly.
The Cubs continue this six-game home stand with the first of three against the Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and it will be another Thirsty Thursday at "The Jack" presented by Danny's Lounge, VFW Post 1590 and WVYB 103.3FM.
