Since training camp with the Wolfpack, Maccarone has spent time with the Whitby Dunlops of Ontario's Major League Hockey and Finnish professional team Roki. While with the Icehawks for 6 games, Matt has scored 2 goals and and assist. At 6' 7" and 220 pounds, Matt will be one of the biggest players in the IHL. The 25-year-old scored 17 goals and 44 assists in 87 games for Wilfrid Lauriere University from 2005 to 2009.

Both brothers also spent time with the Tulsa Oilers of the CHL during the 2008-09 season. Joining the Gems will mark the 4th time the brothers have played for the same team.

The Gems have sent forward Matt Auffrey and defenseman Cody Hamilton to Port Huron in trade for the Maccarone's. Dayton Gems Head Coach John Marks, "In trading, each team hopes to help each other. We needed a center, they needed a right hand shot defenseman. I feel that Adam brings a solid defense ability. He's strong on the puck and battles in the tough areas. His brother, obviously big in size, will fill that center position. He's more of a play maker, which we have been missing. I look forward in them joining the team for our game in Fort Wayne and contributing in the way they are capable of. Hamilton and Auffrey are great guys who will fit in nicely for Port Huron and I wish them well."
