Gems starter Jeff Jakaitis had to stop a penalty shot for the second time this season, this time on IceMen forward Bo Cheesman in the first period. Nicklas Lindberg the IceMen's leading scorer would record the only goal of the game at the 7:03 mark of the second period as Evansville would go onto win by the final score of 1-0. Week in Review: (Saturday, 11-27-10)

Facing the Bloomington PrairieThunder for only the second time this season (after meeting 11 times last season) the Gems were looking to snap a two-game losing streak while the PrairieThunder entered the game on a two-game winning road winning streak. Bloomington jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first before Gems defenseman Nathan Oke tallied his second goal of the season and ended a scoreless streak for the team of 93:39. Rookie defenseman Nick Canzanello tied the game in the second before Tom Boudreau gave the Gems their first lead of the night on the power play at the 16:28 mark. In the third period, each team would score a goal but not until the final three minutes and change remaining in regulation. Erik Boisvert pushed the lead to 4-2 with his team leading 7th goal of the season. Then with just under two minutes remaining, the Gems took two penalties giving the PrairieThunder a 6-on-3 after pulling goalie Bobby Phillips. Kerry Toddington cut the lead to 4-3 with a slap shot from the high slot but that would be the last goal of the game as the Gems held on for the 4-3 win. Jeff Jakaitis picked up his 7th win of the season by stopping 32 of 35 shots faced and eight different Gems recorded at least one point on the night.

Dayton Gems Weekly Notes

NOVEMBER NOT REALLY OUR MONTH: After starting the season with a 4-1-0 record in the month of October, the Gems struggled in November with a record of 5-4-1 (3-2-1 at home, 2-2-0 on the road). Despite outscoring their opponents 30-27 in November, the Gems were out shot by their opponents 368-309 and allowed 40 shots or more against in three games. The power play lost some of its luster as the Gems were only able to convert 7-57 tries (12.28%) and the penalty kill allowed 13 power play goals against only killing off 48-61 attempts (78.69%).

WE NEED THE POWER: The Gems power play is a key contributor to their win totals so far this season. They are 8-2-1 when scoring a power play goal (1-3-0 when they don't score on pp). Case in point, over their last four games, the Gems are 2-16 (12.5%) with the man advantage and their record in those games is 2-2-0. They are 6-3-1 at home and currently ranked in the top ten in the CHL among teams with strong power play percentages on home ice, having converted 10-55 on the power play at home (18.18%).

LET'S PLAY ON SATURDAY: Saturday has been the best night of the week for the Gems this season, they have yet to lose a game in regulation on Saturday's compiling an impressive mark of 6-0-1 overall (3-0-1 at home, 3-0-0 on the road). The Gems have outscored their opponents 24-16 and are capitalizing on their opponent's mistakes having converted on 8-32 (25%) chances with the man advantage situation. Jeff Jakaitis has picked up six of his seven wins on Saturdays and his numbers are very solid with a goals against of 2.28 and a .942 save percentage. Erik Boisvert leads the Gems in scoring on Saturday's with 10 points (4G 6A).

THE BBB LINE IS DOING JUST FINE: The line of Erik Boisvert, Kyle Bochek and Tom Boudreau was back together once again in the Gems 4-3 win over Bloomington on Saturday after playing a few games on separate lines. The three players have combined for 30 points (11G 19A), ten of which have come on the power play (4G 6A). Erik Boisvert and Kyle Bochek each have two game-winning-goals to their credit and Boudreau has been extremely valuable on the penalty kill playing on the top PK unit and blocking a number of shots already this season.

WE'RE TIRED OF SEEING THAT TEAM ALREADY: The Gems will take on the Evansville IceMen for the fifth time in only 16 games this season this Thursday, December 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at Hara Arena, then the two teams meet the very next night for the back end of a home-in-home series in Evansville on Friday, December 3rd at Swonder Ice Arena at 8:35 p.m. The season series between the Gems and IceMen is tied at 2-2. Dayton will finish out the week back home at Hara Arena on Saturday, December 4th at 7:30 p.m. taking on the rival Fort Wayne Komets for the third time this season. The Gems are 2-0 against Fort Wayne having only allowed one goal against in both wins.
