Dayton Gems News Release
Gems Game 4, Road Game 4 - Team Record 0-1-2, 2pts
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Gems professional hockey team travels to the Quad Cities for the first meeting with the Mallards of the season. Tonight's game features the Gems first home-and-home series of the young season, with both clubs motoring back to the Gem city for Dayton's much anticipated home opener on Cassano's Italian Ice at Hara Arena at 7pm Saturday night.
For the Gems (0-1-2), this marks the end of the season opening road stand, with the team playing it's first three regular season games away. Head coach Brian Gratz and his Gems continue to search for their first win, after suffering heartbreaking losses in each of the prior three games played. Last weekend's trip to Rapid City got the Gems the closest yet to their first win, with the Rush edging Dayton with the final shooter in the overtime shootout to capture the 4-3 win last Friday night, and Rapid City bouncing in a go-ahead goal late in regulation to outlast the Gems in a back and forth game on the scoresheet last Saturday.
Game Day In Quad City
The Mallards (2-1-0), under first year head coach David Bell, are hot off two consecutive wins against the Blaze in Bloomington to avenge a season opening loss to Rapid City. Their lone loss to the Rush has the Mallards returning home to the iWireless Center tonight winless in front of the home fans.
Gems Welcome Winnett
Ben Winnett, a 22 year old native of New Westminster, British Columbia, started the season with the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs before heading to Wheeling in the ECHL.Prior to beginning his professional career, Winnett spent four seasons at the University of Michigan, playing alongside current Gems Bryan Hogan, Chad Langlais and Brandon Naurato.
"Ben is a talented player that will get the opportunity to play in a variety of roles for this team, Noted Gems head coach Brian Gratz. He does have familiarity with some of the players on our team already being University of Michigan alum, so his transition should be smooth."
While playing for the Wolverines, Winnett was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in round 4 (#104 overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, hosted by the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
