Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (November 4, 2011) - Jonathan Ornelas scored the third period tie breaker, Brett Lutes delivered what proved to be the game winner just over a minute later and Nick Fanto provided two power play goals and an assist as the Dayton Gems rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the host Quad City Mallards 5-4 Friday night.
After Damian Surma's low drive knotted the score at three at 11:16 of the third, Ornelas broke the deadlock at 14:29 by ripping Dayton's fourth power play goal of the night from the right wing circle. Lutes tipped in the Gems' first even strength goal just over a minute later to make it 5-3. That goal loomed all the larger after Jared Brown one-timed a Mallard power play goal to cut the gap to 5-4 with just under a minute remaining.
The Gems first battled back into the game on the back of a seven-minute second period power play and a pair of Nick Fanto man advantage goals. Fanto jammed home the first Dayton goal at 14:40 and then narrowed the gap to 3-2 on a breakaway 75 seconds later.
Earlier on, it seemed as if the evening was destined to play out in much different fashion. The Mallards' Brandon Marino blasted home the opening goal just less than three minutes into the first period. Marino would go on to pick up assists on each of the next three Mallard goals, starting at 5:50 of the first, when Bobby Price rifled the puck between the pads of Dayton starting goaltender Kristofer Westblom. Westblom exited the contest in favor of Bryan Hogan after Justin Chwedoruk stretched the Mallard lead to 3-0 from close range at 11:56 of the first.
Hogan would make 22 saves in relief to set the stage for his teammates' rally.
The Mallards and Gems will meet again tomorrow night in Dayton. The Mallards next play at home on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:05 p.m. against the Bloomington Blaze. That is game is the Mallards' first "$2 Tuesday" of the season.
