Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - Future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens made a surprise appearance at Fifth Third Field on Friday night as the Dayton Dragons (26-29) opened a four game series with the Beloit Snappers (26-29). The "Rocket" and his son Koby, a third baseman in the Houston Astros organization, made a visit to the ballpark to see the younger Clemens' friend, Dragons outfielder Jay Bruce. The pair plus the other 8,830 spectators were treated to a pitchers duel between Carlos Fisher (ND) of the Dragons and Kyle Waldrop (WP, 4-2) of the Snappers. Beloit pulled out a 3-2 win on a Josh Land two out RBI single in the top of the sixth to take the first game of the four game set.
The Snappers got to Fisher in the top half of the second inning, grabbing a 1-0 lead on a two out double to right center by Dwayne White. Andrew Thompson picked up a one out walk and galloped around the bases on White's extra base hit to give the visitors the early lead. Mike DeJesus tied the ball game up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the second for the Dragons with his second homer of the season. The two out shot to right center came off Waldrop and was the fourth home run of the season the right hander allowed.
Dayton took the lead in the bottom of the third off Waldrop on back-to-back one out hits. Eric Eymann picked up his second hit of the night, lacing a one out triple into the right field corner that White misplayed into a three base hit. Bruce picked up his team leading 34th RBI knocking in Eymann with a single to center giving the Dragons a 2-1 advantage.
The top of the fifth was the Snappers turn to even the score picking a two out hit off Fisher to knot the game once again. The Dragons starter got the first two outs of the inning before plunking Caleb Moore to extend the inning for Land, who came through with two down with a gap double to left center scoring Land from first.
Beloit regained the lead for good, at 3-2, with a single run in the top of the sixth off Dragon reliever Logan Ondrusek (LP, 1-2), who replaced Fisher after 6.0 innings of work. Ondrusek, walked White, the first batter he faced, to open the sixth inning. White stole second base and came home to score the go ahead run on a single to right with two down by Land, who drove in his second run of the night.
The Dragons had a golden opportunity to tie the game up or go ahead in the bottom of the eighth inning after back-to-back walks to open the inning off Snapper reliever Jose Lugo (ND). Beloit Manager Jeff Smith went to the bullpen again and brought in Yohan Pino (ND) who allowed a single to Habelito Hernandez to load the bases with none out. Craig Tatum flew out to right, DeJesus fouled out to the catcher and Gerardo Cabrera flew out to left and the Dragons left the bases loaded without denting the dish.
Frank Mata (SV, 1) pitched a perfect ninth inning to get the save for Waldrop, who tossed 7.0 innings of seven hit three K, one walk, two run baseball.
The Dragons continue the four game series with the Beloit Snappers at Fifth Third Field Saturday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Saturday's game will be televised live on Time Warner Cable Channel 25 with Mike Vander Wood and Reds Hall of Fame Pitcher Tom Browning calling the action, beginning at 7:00 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 6:30 PM.
